FootNote: Here's the SanDisk site with info on the 1.8" 32GB Flash SSDrive. Besides being expensive(that should drop) the current drive has a ZIF connector & will not work in the P1610.
Gotta love the lack of industry standards for 1/8" drives. Perhaps when all iPods are SSD, we'll have more availability and choices.

What would be a good place to buy a new hard drive online? Also, does anyone know if the hd from a toshiba gigabeat would work?
I'm feeling a little lazy, just search for the part # for the 30gb or 60gb Hitachi drive on this forum. I ended up paying about $125 on ebay a few months ago. This was for a new drive w/warranty.

I just upgraded to the 60gb drive, and now i've got a sleek little 30gb external hard drive. this thread really helped! only thing i'd like to add is that norton ghost's interactive disk cloning made everything much easier. |

Dell is now selling a 32GB Solid State 1.8" drive for $550. I need the speed and battery more than I need the storage on my p1610 as it is not my primary machine but only for meeting notes... so I am tempted by this drive... if I can make it work. It uses a PATA interface but comes with a SATA adapter... does anyone know if this is workable given that the P1610 uses the toshiba female ATA-3 interface? |

If it's not the same interface, then no. There is so little space, it just won't fit unless you soldered the connection yourself.
$550? No thanks. I'm going to wait until they are half that price.

Hi,
I'm new here so I don't know much... But wouldn't this SSD fit into the P1510 or the P1610? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820147021
It's PATA and the pins are the same. Only difference is that it's ATA5 instead of ATA3. Would that be a problem? (Doing a google search it seems the speed is the only difference. Voltage looks the same too). |

ARRGH!
Followed the steps.
Brand-new Toshiba MK6006GAH, USB housing & Acronis 10 on 15day trial.
Cloned existing MK3006GAL with Acronis. No errors. Drive readable & accessable in XP.
Installed MK6006GAH per Ishman's instructions. No Boot. Bios sees drive, allows change of boot order, etc, but will not boot.
Put MK6006GAH back in USB tray and reinstall MK3006GAL, boots just fine, XP sees and manipulates both drives just fine.
What's up? It's almost like Acronis refuses to copy the MBR. |

Try image the old drive, install the new one and restore the image. Cloning IDE drive to USB drive might be your problem. |

Now I'm even more confused.
How do I get a system that won't boot with the new drive installed to load an image?
Nothing in the Acronis software gives me any clue to doing that without an IDE CDR.
I have a Buslink D-RWD8-U2, but (A) Acronis will not create bootable media there (no matter what I do - even though XP writes to it just fine...) and (B) I can't boot from it anyway... atleast not from an Acronis recovery disk created on another machine.
I got it to boot into Acronis ONCE, but it started spitting out "can't load linux" "can't load X" "can't load Y" then aborted to a "No operating system found" prompt.
No further attempt(s) to boot from an Acronis CD worked.
I'm perplexed and annoyed. This was supposed to take 30 minutes (ish). I'm getting ready for Day 3.

It is a little complicated procedure. The answer is in here, in this forum. Search. Anyway. Read this: http://www.leog.net/fujp_forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=11397 There is an image of Acronis bootable USB stick. Restore it on any USB stick or HDD, but to get the Acronis to see your stick as a fixed volume (HDD), you need to upgrade its drivers with those for Hitachi Microdrive. Google for them. Then boot from that USB stick and restore your old drive image to the new drive. |

Does anyone know if this new Toshiba 1.8" drive, MK1011GAH, which is 100GB, will fit in the P1610? Seems like it should, no?

It will not fit, it's a CE/ZIF connection! Seems strange that Toshiba has not released a NonZIF version of this 100GB drive |

Thanks...I should have noticed that myself. It just didn't compute that it wouldn't be compatible, so I shut down my logic sensors! |

How about this info copied from jkontherun blog. There is hope for a larger drive yet.
May 22, 2007 1.8 inch hard drive roundup: Toshiba's 40-, 80-, 100 GB offerings Thanks to Greg's comment on the Western Digital 2.5-inch 250 GB drive news, I found this fantastic article on 1.8-inch drives over at Tom's Hardware. The article is 11 pages and filled with tidbits of info on these small drives, covering everything from power requirements, transfer rates and more. The focus is to provide a roundup of Toshiba's offerings in three different capacities now that they have a 100 GB drive in this size as well, which was announced back in April (PDF).
From my quick read, the new MK1011GAH 100-GB drive acheives high power effieciency but still provides excellent transfer rates. I'm not sure how much the new component will cost, but after reading this article, I'm lusting after the drive for my UMPC. Highly recommended reading, even if it's just to better understand the contraints and compromises these smaller drives face.
Update: I found a few on-line resellers that carry or will carry the above referenced 100-GB drive. Mini-Drives indicates they will have them in stock on May 30th at a price of $214.99.

Good price, but as stated above it won't fit in your P1510. |

Just because I'm feeling stupid and vulnerable, I want to check: this one will work in my P1610, right: Toshiba MK8007GAH 80GB.
If I'm wrong again, I'm just going to learn to live with what I have... |

Yes, it's a Non-ZIF model & will definitely work...I have that model in my P1610. |

Thanks so much...I have the 60GB in my P1610 and am thinking of ratcheting up to the 80GB (in lieu of a 1.8" 100GB+ drive being available).
Now we just have to wait for someone to produce a 2GB RAM chip, which with Vista seems to be very nearly a requirement... |

You caught me out...that was just the drive I had spotted, and have now purchased. These drives seem to retail for st least twice as much as they can be found for on eBay from time-to-time. |

abeery, I (and I'm sure many others) am interested in your results. I would like to get a 64gb ssd. I think my 1510 may be obsolete by the time I'm comfortable with the price. |
